Ted Breihan was a distinguished community leader for several decades, serving on the museum’s board of directors from 2000 to 2014. A proud graduate of Southwest Texas State University in 1953, he was an active member of the San Marcos City Council from 1974 to 1980 and contributed to various local organizations, including the Southside Community Center, the Scheib Center, and the United Methodist Church. The community mourned Mr. Breihan’s passing on November 17, 2021, at the age of 95. In recognition of his contributions, the LBJ Museum of San Marcos has named its annual golf tournament in his honor.

This year’s tournament was highly competitive, culminating in a tie for first and second place. The Kissing Tree Golf Course employs USGA standards to resolve such ties. The first-place team, sponsored by John Navarette, featured Scott Yarbrough, Rodney Cobb, Richard Merritt, and Ken Clayborn. The second-place team, representing Sunset Bowling Lanes, consisted of Tyler Compton, John Gates, Chris Sanso, and Billy Smith. Third place went to the team sponsored by Carbajal Associates, which included Peter Quintero, Jesse Sanchez, Victor Wallace, and Jerry DeLeon.
Additional sponsors included Ted Breihan Electric, Frost Bank, Elliott Electric Supply, Inc., Rexel San Marcos, Wineaux Wine Bar, and Texas Roadhouse. Notably, Adam Parker won the closest-to-the-pin contest on hole #4, while Richard Merritt secured the same honor on hole #15. A fan-favorite feature, the cannon launch, returned this year, with Billy Smith achieving the longest distance.
Hole sponsors for the tournament included the Texas State Political Science Department, Melissa and Art Millicam, Elliott Electric Supply, Chloe and John Navarette, H-E-B, Rexel USA, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, Benchmark Insurance, Chuck Nash Auto Group, and JD Martin.
Wayne Kraemer, president of the LBJ Museum board, expressed gratitude, stating, “This year, we are pleased to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the LBJ Museum’s Ted Breihan Memorial Golf Tournament and appreciate all the support we have received from longstanding sponsors.
